Sustainability

For us, sustainability is a given. We always try to make conscious and sustainable decisions about our cultivation methods, the products we use and our company strategy. Everything we do is done with consideration and respect for people, nature and the environment in order to minimise our environmental footprint.

Putting sustainability into practice:

√ Residual heat | Our facility in Maasland is connected to a local grower’s heating system. We use that company’s residual heat in our own greenhouse. This avoids energy being wasted and is a good example of local collaboration.

√ Second production layer | We make optimum use of the space at our Phalaenopsis facility in Maasdijk thanks to the extra production layer above the processing area. This enables us to grow more plants without increasing the size of the greenhouse, which saves a considerable amount of energy required for heating.

√ CHP | Our combined heat and power (CHP) unit enables us to generate electricity and heat in a single process. This significantly reduces the amount of energy wasted when generating power.

√ Heat pump | Our heat pump enables us to reduce our total gas consumption by using electricity instead. The bottom line is that we save a substantial amount of CO2, so it’s a smarter choice.

Thermal energy storage | We use the underground thermal energy storage system at our Phalaenopsis facility in Maasdijk to store heat or cold, depending on the season: heat in the summer and cold in the winter. In the winter we use the stored heat to heat our greenhouse, and in the summer we use the cold for cooling purposes.

√ Biological crop protection | We use as many natural methods as possible to control diseases and pests. We like the logic of using natural predators against problematic insects. And if we do need to use crop protection agents in order to ensure optimal plant health, then we choose them very carefully and always in compliance with the relevant rules, standards and guidelines.
